Fue el segundo single de All That You Can't Leave Behind, después de Beautiful Day y antes de Elevation. Personalmente creo que no está a la altura de ninguna de las dos, y antes pensaba que no pasaba de ser una canción mediocre...
...hasta que leí de qué trataba. No se trata de las letras, ni de la traducción de la canción, simplemente se trata de comprender un nombre: Michael Hutchence.
Bono escribió esta canción en memoria de su amigo Michael, líder de INXS por el motivo de su inesperado suicidio (aparentemente las cosas le iban bastante bien y era totalmente improbable un acto así). Al interpretar la canción como un diálogo, un mensaje para Michael, todo cobra sentido y esta canción toma la forma que se merece:
- I never thought you were a fool, But darling look at you:
Bono nunca se esperaba que llegase a cometer tan acto: "Nunca pensé que fueras un loco, pero "cariño", mira lo que has hecho"
- You gotta stand up straight, Carry your own weight, These tears are going nowhere baby
"Debes mantenerte erguido, soportar tu propio peso, esas lágrimas no te llevan a ningún sitio" (Le echa la culpa por haberlo hecho, esa no era su solución)
Ahora vienen mis favoritas:

"Nunca olvidaré los colores que trajiste, las noches que llenaste con fuegos artificiales,(¿)te dejaron vacío(?)"
Bono se acuerda de el, de como le conoció y se pregunta si el hecho de dar conciertos con su grupo no significaba nada para él (llenar escenarios con fuegos artificiales)

"Todavía estoy maravillado por la luz que me trajiste, escucho a través de tus oídos y a traves de tus ojos puedo ver"
- And you are such a fool To worry like you do
"Realmente eres un loco por preocuparte de la forma en la que lo haces" (por cosas que carecen de importancia)
- Oh love, look at you now, You've got yourself stuck in a moment, And you can't get out of it
"Mírate "cariño", te has quedado atascado en un momento y ahora ya no puedes salir de allí" (tú solo te has metido en este lío que no tenía importancia y ahora te ha atrapado por completo)
- I was unconscious, half asleep The water is warm 'til you discover how deep
"Estaba inconsciente, medio dormido, el agua está templada hasta que descubres cuanta profundidad hay"
(Nunca me dí cuenta, no sé porque no lo vi venir, pensé que no tendría importancia, hasta que descubrí que realmente era muy importante)
(La metáfora del agua es como la profundidad de un rio/playa, pensaba que el agua estaba templada (poca profundidad) pero realmente no era así y era "muy profundo")
- I wasn't jumping, for me it was a fall It's a long way down to nothing at all
"Nunca saltaría, para mí sería una caida, un largo camino abajo hacia ningún sitio"
(Yo nunca pensaría en suicidarme, es un camino que no lleva a ningún sitio)
- It's just a moment This time will pass
"Es sólo un momento, este problema pasará"
(Finalmente la canción termina sugiriendo que "si dudas en tu camino, si es un camino lleno de obstáculos, no debes preocuparte, llegará un momento en el que el mal trago pasará": la moraleja es que no hay que hacer como Michael y ahogarse en sus propias dudas, simplemente seguir adelante)
En fin, que canción mas bonita....

Intenta levantarse pero no puede (está Stuck In a Moment). La gente pasa a su alrededor y no hace nada por ayudarle. Finalmente, alguien se percata de su estado (The Edge) y le tiende la mano en un gesto de ayuda. El video termina cuando se dan la mano para levantarle del suelo.
Además de esta canción, en mucho conciertos Bono tambien dedica "One" a Michael. |
